TDM Festival 2017

Leicester's Cultural Quarter : 27th & 28th May

What Is TDM?

Location

TDM Festival is a diverse music festival, primarily in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter on 27th & 28th May 2017. The cultural quarter is an area of Leicester that was transformed from a textile and shoes hub into one for creative industries, artists, designers and crafts people. This makes it a true creative centre for the city. TDM aims to draw on the diversity and creativity within Leicester, by bringing a range of musical performances and genres from around the world directly to some of Leicester’s most popular venues. It will be a celebration of diverse live music.

What Does TDM Mean?

As for our name, TDM stands for a few things… Firstly, it stands for Tour De Music. This was a world music project that TDM’s coordinator created with fellow students while at university. It was this project that gave her the inspiration to create a quality world music festival on a larger scale. It also stands for the fact that it will feature Truly Diverse Music across the line-up. We wanted the festival name to give a nod to its origins, as well as looking forward to the future of the festival in 2017 and beyond! With our team having backgrounds in music themselves, the festival is one created by musicians, featuring musicians, for those that love music.

Line up

The TDM Festival events will focus on certain elements of music, whether that be genre or style of playing. For example, you can expect everything from acoustic sets to explosive stage performances. Below you can see details of the artists who have been announced so far as performers on this year’s line-up!

57

57 (Oh Chill)57 (pronounced Oh-Chill in Korean) is a two-piece rock duo based in Seoul, South Korea featuring guitarist JunHong Yun and drummer Seol Kim. In 2014, the band moved from their hometown of Jeonju to Seoul, where they immediately caught the attention of both crowds and critics. They were hailed as a band to watch and released their highly acclaimed self-titled debut EP. Heavily influenced by alternative, garage, and punk rock bands, the “57” EP captured the raw energy and sound that fans loved about their electrifying live performances.

In 2015, 57 competed in two of South Korea’s most prominent band audition competitions. They won first place at KT&G Band Discovery and reached the finals of Hello Rookie. Riding the momentum of their success at these competitions, 57 went on to appear at many of the major Korean music festivals the following year. This included Jisan Valley Rock Festival, Busan International Rock Festival, Jeju Stepping Stone Festival, and Korea’s largest international showcase, Zandari Festa.

2016 saw the band invited to the UK to play at the world-renowned Liverpool Sound City festival. Following this performance, the band embarked on a highly successful three-week tour of the UK. 57 are currently working on their eagerly anticipated first full-length album, due to be released in March 2017. To celebrate, the band is planning to launch a spring tour of Korea and the UK, including their performance for TDM Festival! You can catch them at Manhattan34 on Saturday 27th May from 5-7pm.

PRESS QUOTES:

“Charged with a ferocious amount of energy, South Korean pair 57 are renowned for their supercharged live shows. They combine to make thunderous, neck breaking tracks as demonstrat ed on their self-titled EP 5 7. If there is one way to blast away the cobwebs from Saturday’s late night antics, this is it.” – Gigwise

House of Verse

House-of-VerseIt all began in a dynamic debate. One newly bud wordswom’n, Hibword, bounced ideas she had momentarily visualised: a three-dimensional land of language… land gauge. A place where entire bodies would experience words, poetry could be embodied and ideas entirely involving and interactive. Feedback after her first event spurred Hibword to amplify the performance element of the event. As an initial fusion of spoken word poetry, comedy, music, rap, beatbox and sound/video installation, it became immediately apparent that the variety of artisans strewn across Leicester was rich and eager to give.

The variety event extended its arms to a more diverse anthology of performers, becoming bi-monthly shows. These are adorned even more ornately each time with penta-bunting, rogue rugs, smooshes of cushions, wallfuls of hangings, slinks of funky blankets, and smoked with incense. House of Verse has become more than just a performance; it’s a community, a tribe, a power, a vibe.

Considered THE variety event in Leicester, this eclectic, electric, creative artist collective will be curating two never-before-seen events especially for TDM Festival. House of Verse is now made up of a diverse range of artists, including a Mexican storyteller, spoken word, Barbadian MC, Indo-African Beatbox/Looper, Soul/Blues group, Flamenco guitarist and much more! Having staged their first group event in September 2014, this buzzing collective have gone from strength to strength. They will be bringing their unique, fast-paced mix of art forms to a TDM venue takeover. You can catch them at The Exchange on Saturday 27th May from 3-5pm and Sunday 28th May from 5-7pm. This is an experience not to be missed!

Mudibu

MudibuMudibu is a Burundian artist living in the UK. Burundi is a small country in East Africa with a bloody history but less attention on the World stage. He is no stranger to violence, surviving the infamous school massacre of Kibimba when he was 16 years old and just a few months later came within an inch of losing his life a second time in a gang shooting which left him seriously wounded. With the help of a scholarship from the ‘The Hugh Pilkington Charitable Trust’ based in Oxford, he came to the UK to study and has lived here ever since. But, he has not forgotten his homeland. As time passes he is trying to make sense of the society he grew up in and music helps him walk this path.

You don’t need to know anything about Mudibu’s past, or even the language he sings in, to feel the message conveyed in his songs. He possesses a rich and powerful voice, a charismatic stage presence and an intensity and passion to his melodies. The way he performs instantly captures the listener’s attention and reaches deep inside.

Mudibu is a self taught musician. From around 2002 armed with a guitar, he started gigging around London talent music venues. He will be performing at the Solo Sessions event at Manhattan34 on Sunday 28th May as part of the line-up for TDM Festival 2017.

MUHA

MUHANottingham-based MUHA is a band with brilliant live performance skills. The  members come from different walks of life, drawing on their experiences and combining their expertise to create a truly unique sound. The band formed in 2006 when singer-songwriter Iryna Muha met guitarist Dmitry Fedotov. Together with Louise Clements on bass/kathak vocals and Nikki Mckenzie on percussion, MUHA offers an enthralling fusion of Slavonic-rooted music enhanced with rhythms and global folklore narratives.

Their newly recorded album Reka, meaning River, offers a new tradition in contemporary Eastern European music. It has been created from the band’s influences from the multicultural society they experience in the UK. MUHA entertain audiences with their musicianship through a sound stemming from eastern roots, engaging listeners through a variety of languages and catchy grooves. Their music is a combination of the melodic beauty of Eastern European folklore, North Indian Kathak rhythms, Cuban beats and original lyrics. They mesmerise with a musical feast rooted in the Slavonic tradition but cultured from the world.

With regular gigs up and down the UK, MUHA will be bringing their unique take on Eastern European fusion to the TDM Festival this year. You can catch them at Manhattan34 on Saturday 27th May at the World Rock event from 5-7pm.

Nia Soul

Nia Soul is a singer songwriter from a vibrant, multi – cultural environment. It is this environment that inspires Nia’s music, influenced by the pulsating rhythm of life and music that surrounds her. She is not one to conform to a particular genre of music, instead successfully encompassing a plethora of genres. These include Soul, RnB, Neo Soul, Acid Jazz, Hip Hop and Funk. This musical fusion creates a distinctive sound and culminates in the unique and refreshing style that is, Nia Soul.

TDM approached Nia about having a festival slot after seeing her brilliant performance at established Leicester venue, The Donkey. Nia’s fresh talent is on the line-up early in her already developing career, but deservedly so! Although new to the industry, Nia is already making waves in the local Leicester live music scene. Her performances include a support slot for the legendary Craig Charles at Leicester’s O2 Academy. This new, versatile solo vocalist is one to watch!

Nia will be performing a special solo performance of her unique blend of urban music for TDM Festival 2017. You can catch her show as part of the Solo Sessions event at Manhattan34 on Sunday 28th May from 3-5pm.
